Donnington Brewery

About this place

Donnington Brewery is a working brewery near Stow-on-the-Wold, set beside the River Dikler in the north Cotswolds. Its mill buildings and rural surroundings give the place a strong sense of local history, and the brewery remains an active business rather than a museum-style attraction. Father Brown viewers may recognise it from “The Brewer’s Daughter”, where the brewery and pub scenes bring the story into a different corner of the Cotswolds.

It also appears in “The Children of Kalon”, linking it to another case built around a returning character. The brewery also appears in “Dead Air” from Sister Boniface Mysteries. In Father Brown, Donnington Brewery is identified as Mrs Devine’s house in the later parish era; Mrs Devine is a recurring character in Series 10–13.

The surrounding countryside offers a lovely backdrop for a drive or a longer walk, while nearby Stow-on-the-Wold has shops and places to pause for refreshments. Spring and early autumn are comfortable seasons for exploring this part of the Cotswolds, and summer gives longer daylight for combining several villages. Because this is a working site, check directly whether visitors are welcome before setting out and follow any access instructions.

The licensed exterior photograph below gives a view from outside; please stay on public routes and do not enter operational areas without permission. For fans, the pleasure is in recognising how a real rural workplace can shift from the brewery setting of one episode to the broader village atmosphere of another. It is an interesting stop in the series’ wider Cotswolds landscape, best enjoyed as part of a considered route rather than an unannounced visit.

In Father Brown, the brewery is also identified as Mrs Devine’s house, connecting it to the later parish era in Series 10–13.

Also in Sister Boniface Mysteries: the brewery is named as the hidden radio station location in “Dead Air” (Series 2, Episode 8).

Take your time, check each venue’s current visitor details before setting out, and enjoy the real places with care.
